Cross Country running

cross country runningYou will be best joining a running club for this one, cross country running is both rewarding and competitive, you can do it alone or with friends, but its best as a competition. You will get the pumping adrenaline, the desire to win, and not to metion all the health benefits that come with being healthy.

It is a sport in which teams of runners compete to complete a course over open or rough terrain faster than other teams. The courses used at these events may include grass, mud, woodlands, and water. It is a popular participatory sport, and usually takes place in temperate regions during the autumn and winter when soft conditions underfoot prevail.

The benefits of cross-country are both mental and physical. The runner who is experienced in cross-country is more robust, more versatile and less likely to be thrown by a sudden change in the weather - an event surprisingly common in major championships in the UK.

cross country runningThe physical benefits derive from the greater demands on the musculature already mentioned above. Greater strength around the hips gives greater leg speed. Perhaps more importantly, training and competing for months in the cross-country season provides tough physical training, working over a wide range of speeds, without the damaging effects of the cumulative jarring that results from track or road training.
Cross-country has its drawbacks, the chief one being that it develops a style of running which is not efficient for the high speeds of track and road racing.
