The Dreaded Sunday Blues

sundayThe weekend is over and the blues begin to set in as you think of the work week to come. The evening is quiet and you feel a slight sickness in your stomach. You have begun to feel blue and your stress level has started to rise. This makes concentrating on anything else a little hard. You know that this is one of those nights when you will not be sleeping correctly.
Remember, your life is totally different on the weekend than it is through the week. You are doing other things including spending relaxation time with the family, friends, or doing something quiet at home. Sometimes, it is hard for you to go back to work after this time. You are given a time to space yourself from work and the issues that might exist there. Your mind has time to rest. This is also the time when you begin to think about whether or not life is going as you plan it and if the job you have is the one you should be in. This does not happen when you are actually in the process of working during the week.

What steps can you take to prevent the Sunday blues from affecting you?

  1. Get in the habit of writing things down in a to-do list so you can keep track. When you write these things in the diary each day, they do not go through your mind as much because they are made solid by writing them.
  2. Make sure you have some sort of social life. Have your friends over for a night of fun and company. This will allow you the rest and relaxation needed to take your mind off your issues at work.
  3. Make sure you have the right amount of exercise to raise the seratonin levels in the body. Even a nice walk or an hour in the gym will make such a difference to your mind and general mood.
  4. Watch a movie or do something that will take your mind off your problems. Make the movie funny and happy to get you in a good mood and to make you laugh. The movies with sadness or horror will only serve to make you think about how bad things can be and your mood will drop.
  5. If the feelings of depression are becoming worse and the thoughts you have will not go away, you might need to consider getting help to keep anxiety under control. You might have some physical problems which is adding to the issues on your mind.
  6. Take some time to get away from your everyday environment. It only needs to be a weekend away. Make your time stretch as long as you can and make sure you do not return home until Sunday night when you can go to be shortly after. You will not have time to worry about the coming week and will be ready to go to sleep after a full day of activity.

golfThere are things you never do on Sunday night. Never have any contact with old lovers or spouses on Sunday. You also need to work out any disagreements or disputes at other times. Your budget and finances need to be a part of the week and not the weekend. Stay away from romantic movies or old love letters on Sunday. Keep yourself away from photo albums. This is especially true if they contain  pictures of those close to you who have passed away. Work on your relationship at another time.  You might consider changing jobs, as a last resort,  if the feelings are becoming more and more on your mind.
